Headlights

This is also for Luke. Here's the previous post: Just Another Morning
I know this won't make a bit of sense to any of you, but really it's just to show you a bit of what this story will contain. I also beg your pardon for my technical mistakes. I have no idea if what I wrote is actually possible for a car. And again I remind you, rough draft.
Regardless, I hope you do enjoy it.
Thanks!
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Headlights, vicious and bright like a pair of animalistic eyes darted behind her suddenly. The truck roared up on her tail threateningly.

Not my car. She thought venomously, switching into a higher gear. She hadn’t been this keyed up since before the accident. Her car purred anxiously, it hadn’t had the chance to show her what it could do since she rebuilt it.

Aiyanna had been too cautious.

In a few seconds the monstrous truck was far behind her she couldn’t help a “That’s right bitch.” mumble passed her lips.

A grin crept along her face as she sped past her house, the scenery changing in an instant from open fields to the towering trees.  The adrenaline and the power itching under her foot swelled up inside her. She’d never felt so released from her own skin.

Aiyanna’s moment was ruined by the roar of the truck coming up behind her along with a number of smaller trucks appearing on either side from crossing roads.

She frowned, but didn’t look at them. She knew her attention belonged on the road, not on the imbeciles trying to run her off of it.

They hugged her on either side as the trunk once again closed in the rear. Aiyanna saw a turn ahead and she knew she’d have close to a split second to lose them before there’d be no escape of a collision.

Just before the road began to curve, Aiyanna hit the gas, nipping the front corner of the truck on the right as she turned. An almost nervous laugh escaped her as she came out of the turn and then she saw the animal waiting for her in the middle of the road.

She slammed on her breaks and the car fishtailed a full one eighty. It seemed to be watching her as she skid passed it a sinister grin along the entirety of its muzzle. She could have sworn it was laughing at her.

It was then that she felt what had been haunting her for more than a year. Her heart pounded in her head as the floating sensation of losing control of her car enveloped her. It was followed by the whip of gravity taking control and her head crashed a moment against her seat. The next second of Aiyanna’s reasoning would determine whether or not she made it out of this spiral alive.

Not this time.

Aiyanna gripped the clutch with both hands and threw her car into neutral, then slammed on her brakes. Her car cried out as if in pain as it continued to spin off the road and down the slope. It seemed a miracle when it straightened out and came to a ringing stop, the side inches from pretzel-ing around a tree.

The world seemed to tilt as Aiyanna’s breath slowed, sweat rolling down her face despite the chill. After a moment, she got out of her car stumbling as she went, patting it. “Atta baby.” She mumbled.

She expected it wouldn’t be long before the animal found her and she didn’t mind, though she’d have preferred the headlights of all those trucks peering down from the road at the scene. She was ready for a fist fight with Janna anyway.

Aiyanna should have known by then that hoping for anything never got her anywhere.

There was a number of low grumblings from the trees behind her and before she could react, at least five of the animals had to be surrounding her. The sky was dark in the absence of the moon and the headlights of the car were facing the wrong direction. She couldn’t see a thing.

Footfall. These were definitely human and they were right in front of her. Both people were silent. It would have been a stare down if Aiyanna could see.

Then Janna spoke. “Looks like you’re out of this race...slut.”

Aiyanna’s mouth was ready to fight back so she hardly felt the rock colliding with her head.

Aiyanna’s body slumped to the ground and Janna nudged the limp leg with her bare foot.

Luke sunk back into the trees on the other side of the road. Going in now would be too risky.

Aiyanna woke up to a crashing sound. The floor shook and dirt fell onto her face. She coughed and brushed it away, trying to sit up. She made it to her knees when her head spun. Hissing, she dabbed the back of her head, feeling a thick crust of dried blood in her hair.

A snarl erupted above her and she cringed in the dark, then remembered with a twitch Janna knocking her out.

The snarl turned into a yelp and a door creaked open above her and not much more light entered the room. Hurried steps came down a set of cement stairs and stopped on the last few steps. She could barely make out a silhouette that seemed familiar to her.

Without a word, the figure scooped Aiyanna off of the ground, and once they got up the stairs, she found that she was in Luke’s arms.

“Luke.” She started to whisper, but was stopped by his stern expression and clenched jaw.

She really didn’t understand what was going on and Luke being there made it even more confusing. She bit her lip, feeling like she couldn’t even ask, especially Luke.

He continued not to speak, or even look at her for that matter, as her carried her up the stairs.

The room above was just as dark as the cellar she had believed herself to be in. They didn’t stop on their way outside, and Aiyanna couldn’t bring herself to look back at where she had been. It’d probably be best left unknown to her.

She did look ahead, however, and saw that Luke was carrying her toward the same car that had been chasing her down the night before. If it had been last night; Aiyanna felt lost and out of sync with the real world.

Luke set her on her feet a moment, leaving one arm tight around her waist and opened the car door with one hand, then swiftly picked her up again and laid her in the seat. It would have been tender if his whole body hadn’t been so tense.

Aiyanna stayed still, not wanting to give Luke any reason to argue with her again. When he tried to get in the driver’s seat though, she found she needed to move and went to sit up. Luke quickly got in the seat, slammed the car door, and locked it. He then slowly put his hand on her shoulder and brought her down again, her head ending up on his leg, nearly in his lap.

“Don’t move and stay down…please.” Luke added on the please hastily after realizing his command had been pretty harsh.

Aiyanna said nothing and obeyed. He didn’t look her in the eyes and started the monstrous truck.

Luke started off to who knew where and Aiyanna stared up at him. The way his eyes and mouth were set made him seem much more serious and forlorn. Aiyanna didn’t like it. She preferred his smile. This expression didn’t suit him at all. It attempted to smooth out the natural lines of laughter in his face and turn them to stone and was failing miserably.

The truck rumbled and bounced along, and Aiyanna could only guess of all the logs and boulders they must have been going over.

She continued to study his face stubbornly, daring him with her gaze to look down so she could read his eyes. His eyes stayed straight ahead, but his tight mouth slowly began to loosen. She looked away frowning at his refusal to respond and situated herself a little more comfortably. Luke shifted his legs a little in response. So he was aware of her.

Aiyanna sighed a breath of warm air onto his bare leg and she felt his leg tense under her ear. She grinned, but before she could relish in her power the truck stopped abruptly.

“Stay here.” Luke mumbled and slid his leg right out from under her head and out of the truck.

Her head bounced down onto the seat and it rattled like a chair had just been pulled from under her and she’d fallen on the floor. The pain that had ebbed from earlier returned with a vengeance and she swallowed a bit of bile.

She waited for the spinning to stop, but continued to lay down. Luke hadn’t said that she couldn’t sit up and she wondered a moment if she should, but her throbbing head made the decision for her a second later. She closed her eyes and put her arm over them. A groan escaped her just as the car door opened again.

She didn’t move.

“Can you get up?” Luke asked.

She peeked one eye at him apologetically. “I don’t think so.”

He promptly reached in and scooped her up again.

This time, Aiyanna laid her head between his shoulder and neck, trying to relax against his warmth.

She was being moved into a Jeep and only after Luke had strapped her in, did he finally flash a small grin. No teeth showed, but it still made her feel like the Luke she had known hadn’t completely disappeared.

They continued bouncing and swaying along and Aiyanna held her head.

Luke was silent again and on a smoother period she turned to him.

“Are you not going to talk to me at all? Or tell me what’s going on.”

He gave her a hurt look, then shook it. “How’s your head feeling?”

“Terrible!” She said like holding her head this entire time hadn’t been obvious enough.

“Well,” Luke threw the Jeep into park, throwing them slightly. “Dr. Luke is in.”

He grinned, a bit of a dark humor in his voice.

Aiyanna’s stomach clenched and she watched him jump out of the vehicle turning back with a wink as he said, “Aren’t you lucky?”

She turned and watched him as he began grabbing a number of bags out of the back. It was too dark for her to see much of anything outside of the Jeep; Luke had never turned the headlights on. Luke didn’t seem to be having any trouble; he was doing something with the bags near the car.

After a few minutes, Aiyanna couldn’t sit still any longer. She tenderly, and slowly, lowered herself out and over to Luke. He was on his knees, a mess of poles around, and in his hands.

“Is that a tent?”

He didn’t halt his operation. “Nope. This is my clinic.”

“And what’s supposed to happen in this clinic?” Aiyanna asked, skeptical.

“I’m gonna make you all better.” Luke answered in baby voice.

Aiyanna was surprised by how his mood had suddenly changed.

She stood watching him for only a minute longer before her head started to throb again, so she sat on the ground. The grass-like plant underneath surprised her and she ran her hands through it meditatively.

She didn’t ask Luke why there were out in the middle of nowhere instead of taking her home or preferably to the nearest hospital, she knew. Janna had kidnapped Aiyanna with her posy of pussies and wouldn’t stop at anything to get her again. It wasn’t safe and Luke couldn’t take them all on.

Luke interrupted her thoughts with throwing a pad into the small, but well contrasted tent, following it with a sleeping bag.

“Your bed is ready, my patient.” He chimed.

Aiyanna crawled into the tent past Luke somewhat annoyed.

She laid down and Luke began to fiddle with things in another bag, finally bringing a damp cloth to her forehead, then moving to the back. Yet again, he neglected to turn on any kind of light.

“Don’t you have a flash light or lamp or something?” She grumbled at him as he dabbed the dried blood out of her hair and from the wound.

“No.” he said calmly.

She hissed as the cloth broke raw flesh. “Sorry.” He mumbled.

“You can see?” she demanded.

“Yes.” He matched her tone.

Luke clamped his mouth shut, moving her slightly again to peer around the wound it seemed. He wasn’t going to say any more.

She was turned over onto her back and she set a pair of pleading eyes on Luke. If he really had no trouble in this dark, he’d understand her look. Aiyanna caught a glitter of his eyes as they turned to her. She heard him sigh before he leaned down quickly, breathing a moment between her jaw and neck. Then he just as quickly kissed her on the cheek.

Somehow even in this moment something came to Aiyanna.

Her eyes turned down in a worried expression, “How did you get me out of there?”

Luke turned his head away and squeezed her hand, “Don’t ask me that.”

She ignored his pleading. “And what the hell were all of those… animals in the woods before I passed out? I mean, they were huge! Were they listening to Janna? Where-”

Luke had put his hand over her mouth. “Just be quiet and go to sleep.”

Aiyanna bit his hand and he pulled away, “But Luke-”

“No, Aiyanna.” He’d turned his back to her and was hunched over like he’d had his arms wrapped around his knees. Aiyanna had a sudden image of a cold stone statue of a Romantic genre, a display of an unbearable shame. “Not tonight.” His voice dropped like it does when you’re trying not to cry. “Tomorrow.”

Sorrow filled the tiny tent, choking the voice right out of Aiyanna.

Luke sat like that for a long time and Aiyanna couldn’t sleep. Eventually, he came and lied down next to her, but stayed out of the sleeping bag. She scooted closer to him and touched his forehead with hers.

Just Another Morning

This is the lovely intro to my idea of Luke. Tell me what you think. I was surprised by how this came out. Let me know if it's odd because it originally was playing in my head like a movie. Theme song for this segment is Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Her only thought was to run. Run as fast as she could through the trees, branches scrapping her arms and legs. The pain didn't register, just like the possibility of death didn't seem real until a ferocious growl erupted in front of her. Then she knew that her life could end right there. Death was behind her and it was breathing thick, hot breath down her neck.

Aiyana's feet moved back and forth softly in her sleep as the sound of her alarm went off, but it didn't wake her.

A wolf yawned and sniffed the air, stretching its claws in the soft dirt, cool from the morning dew. It padded off lazily through the dense trees of a deep area of forest.

A bird sang out of Aiyanna's window while the sun finally peaked threw the blinds. Her eyes twitched then snapped open and she flew out of her bed. She was going to be late.

A rabbit darted out of the brush, the wolf on its tail. Breakfast.

Aiyanna snagged a Poptart from the cabinet and shoved it in her mouth, then silently snuck past her aged and snoring father on the couch, cautiously dodging beer cans like mines. She stuffed her shoes on once on the front porch.

The wolf dodged through trees and brush at full speed careful to stay out of sight when near the road.

The tires of Aiyanna's white '89 Corvette speed along the windy road amidst the forest and she had the window cracked letting in the fresh, wet air.

The wolf slowed then paced, anxious, and peered from the shadows at the high school, he didn't have much longer.

Aiyanna's car screeched to a halt in a small parking space, she stormed out and slammed the car door, her back pack over her shoulder and just as the bell rang, a young man, that she had yet to see, walked out of the trees, brushing the last of the pine needles from his hair.
