Sight-Legacy

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No one moved as the echoing died throughout the chapel. Jacob continued to hold onto me tightly as I began to feel light headed.

The father moved first, shuffling toward the knocked over pews, Gabriel quickly went to help him.

I tried to fight the tears, but when I failed, I turned into Jacob's chest, clutching his shirt and trying to breathe evenly. He gingerly held me against him and let me do what I needed.

I mumbled several things. I don't even remember what they were, but Jacob hushed me and kept telling me it would be alright.

I felt Gabriel behind me after some time, but he made no move to comfort me. I stopped eventually, rubbing my eyes and whispering an apology to Jacob. He sighed and shook his head. "It's nothing." I saw the pity in his eyes.

His sympathy only aided my fear and I craved Gabriel's comforting touch.

I faced Gabriel and his expression froze me. His eyes were hard, scrutinizing, and they studied me cautiously.

"Gabe." I nearly whimpered again. He closed his eyes, sighed, and opened his arms to me. I immediately wrapped my arms around his neck and he picked me up as if I were only a child.

He rubbed his cheek against mine and whispered in my ear, "There's something you need to read."

"At home." I whispered back waiting for the fear to let his peace in. I wasn't going to let go of him until it did.

"Let's go Jacob." Gabe said to Jake. I didn't like how gruff he'd sounded.

Gabriel carried me out to the car and I clung to him for my life.

He tried to set me down and I grasped tighter.

I heard the sound of the keys. He must have tossed them to Jacob. He didn't let go of me, carefully shifting me into his lap in the back seat and I was grateful.

In the house, he continued to hold me in the chair and I was finally starting to feel better. The ache and dread that seemed to be in my core was beginning to ebb, but I still remained encased in him taking in the holly sent of him. Today he smelled like fresh rain soaking up a warm pavement. Jacob said nothing.

"Are you ready now?" Gabe whispered after a while.

"I guess so." I answered, sitting up slowly.

Gabe reached forward and picked up a small brown book from the table. It's rough and somewhat cheap appearance gave away part of its identity. It was a journal of some sort.

"I'd told you I'd known you your whole life." Gabe started. I nodded.

"I did mean your entire life, not long after you were conceived. And so, I knew your mother." I stared at him. Not once remembering his presence in my life before a year ago.

"This was hers." He continued acknowledging the journal and handing it to me. "She wanted you to have it when you were ready."

I stared at the small book. It was needless to say that I was ready now and somehow I knew this held more answers for me.

I got up from Gabriel's lap and went to my room shutting the door quietly and lowering myself to my bed. I opened to the first page.

This first thing that surprised me was the key that fell out onto my lap and as curious as I was about it, I set it aside. I'd find out about it later.

I then began to read.

My little Anna,

I know that it will be hard for you to be without me, but I know that there is a strength in you that will help you get by, along with many who will help you. I also know that by the time you read this, you will have a lot of questions that I will try to answer about me, yourself, and especially your father.

End Sight: Book One.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This would be the point, that I most recently decided, where Book One would end. What would follow would be Anna's mother, Amy's, story or as I like to call it The Devil Has Blue Eyes. Then after that there would be a third and final book, which I shall start beginning to compile shortly. :D

A Little More Time

My newest thing. It had been stuck in my head for a few days and I tried to deny it, but I failed. When I was first thinking about it, it seemed like it could be a music video or maybe just a short mini movie kind of thing. Just before I had to write it a phrase go stuck in my head that sounded like it could be song lyrics.
Wake up, baby. I don't have much longer and I have to say "I love you" one more time.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The room was dark and I walked across the wood floor. It was cold, though my feet made no sound. Or maybe I just knew it was cold with the snow outside. I passed through the shoes on the floor, but I went around the side of the bed and knelt there. My face was level with his and I watched him breathe deeply as he slept.

My sorrow was swelling in my chest, threatening waves in my eyes, but I held it back.

I jumped at the sound of his phone ringing on the side table. It rang three times before he stirred. He started to reach toward the night stand, and I moved out of the way hastily. I only realized afterwards that it wouldn’t have made a difference.

He answered, and I don’t know how, but I knew that this was the call. I watched him carefully as his expression fell, as he turned and sat on the edge of the bed, his hand ran over his eyes and mouth. He left his eyes closed, thanked the caller, and hung up the phone, setting it beside him carefully.

His knuckles turned whiter and whiter as his clutched his hands in his lap. He choked and then the tears came. I couldn’t hold back anymore. I threw my arms around him, they didn’t go through him, but I still couldn’t feel his warmth. Tears poured from my eyes as I called his name, trying to comfort him, telling him that I could still be alright, begging him not to worry, and not to give up on me yet.

I was being torn from the inside out as I watched him break and could do nothing. I didn’t understand how I could still feel this much.

I didn’t leave even as he threw things at the wall, the shattered pieces falling through me. I stayed as he screamed into his sheets and when he finally was overcome with sleep, I laid next to him, invisible, not making a single dent in the mattress. Not once did the tears stop flowing from my eyes though they lessened.

I knew this was how it was going to end; we would both be helpless, divided.

Morning was coming and that I didn’t have much longer with him like this. I was reluctant to move, let alone to leave. I just needed a little more time.

I couldn’t stop myself again, as wrong as it was, to reach out and stroke his face, folding my hand around the curve of his cheek. The tears came hot yet again as his warmth seeped through my fingers. Light began to trace around my shape, shadowed on his face and I watched it change as he began to wake.

His eyes flashed open suddenly and he looked right at me. He blinked, then his hand flashed out grabbing mine and he brought my lips to his.

It was like I was alive again and as impossible as this was I couldn’t deny it. My body was so real as he pulled me onto the bed with him. He held me like that, kissing me and wiping the tears off of my face.

As the time passed I could feel him less and less and I could see his panic as he felt it too. I was already too far gone before I realized it was my last moment. I knew I couldn’t speak if I tried, so I smiled through the tears, stroked his face and kissed him one last time.

I could feel the plead in his kiss, but I couldn’t comply. I stood and continued to face him as I let the light take me.

I was just getting used to the light when it abruptly ended and became darkness. Slowly I began to hear sounds that I didn’t expect, feel things that didn’t make sense….

I opened my eyes, knowing instantly where I was and why, along with who was here with me.

I turned my head on the pillow being careful not to move too much with what felt like a million things strapped to me. I could hear my heart rate quicken on the monitor as my eyes landed on him.

He was staring at me, eyes wide in shock. I smiled again.

“I’m sorry I made you cry.” I whispered.

And he cried again bringing my hand and anything else he wasn’t afraid to touch to his lips.

The Room

Something that came out to go along with this art project:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I walked toward my destination, a key around my neck. The only other sound besides my echoing footsteps was the stirring of white curtains by a soundless wind in the open windows that I passed, every once in a while seeing a broken one. Each window provided me a glimpse into the dark room, but the never changing light from the nearly setting sun slightly illuminated a figure alone in its center. I turned the corner stopping in an open doorway with curtains billowing at my ankles, a living flame in my hands.
There was broken debris barely visible all over the floor and on many of the surfaces throughout the room. Chairs and small tables lay in ruins and every so often a piece was identifiable as glass or a bit of a mirror, but the rest were so destroyed that they were unrecognizable as to what they once were when they were whole.
A figure stood amongst it all, as I had seen through the windows, barefoot in a white dress.

“What happened?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, but still resonating throughout the room.

My flame lit her face as she turned her head slowly with a face I knew, but with an expression that I had never seen.

With dried tears streaked on her cheeks she answered, “I let him in.”

A broken, unnameable piece quivered in her hand as she knelt on one of the few clear spaces on the floor, her legs disappearing as her dress fell around her.

“I- I don't know where to start.” her voice shook and broke sounding almost like a plea.

I transfered the flame to one hand, reaching down and choosing a piece that was larger than those around it.

I finally entered the room slowly walking toward her. It didn't take much effort not to step on the millions of shards in my path. I knelt close behind her, careful not to touch, taking the piece gently out of her hand and with my arm reaching out from behind her, laying it on the floor. Then, I took my piece and laid it with hers. It was a perfect fit.

“Let's start here.” I answered, and my flame glowed a little brighter.

As Empty As It Seemed

Another short story.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As empty as it seemed, it felt like that there was inevitably something there. Something I was missing, the last piece hiding beneath my nose.

A clocked ticked loudly in my head.

I was running out of time.

I flipped through the pages once more opening my eyes wider to see anything and everything that could possibly be among the pages.

A glimmer, a flash. I didn’t know what it was that threw the candle’s flame across my eyes, but it caught my attention. I turned the pages back franticly when the book opened nearly on its own in front of me.

Embedded in a few pages was a ring. It was silver with the band coming around a light blue gem, with two small topaz, and clear stones on either side of it. My first name with his last were scribbled on the page.

Water welled up in my eyes. I had found what I was looking for, but I still had failed completely.

The doors burst open behind me, blowing out the candle on the desk. An orange glow flowed in in its place.

“Do you have it?” a strained voice asked between gasps of breath. “Do you have what he said would protect us?”

“Yes, William.” I managed to say between sobs, pulling my new treasure onto my left ring finger.
“Then, we should be getting out of this place.” William replied, with a more quiet voice and kinder tone.
There was a roar above and a crash, rumbling the entire building. Dust began to fall from the stone ceilings. I held the ring on my finger to my heart, taking in whatever power it possessed and hoping to make it a part of me.

William strolled into the room, gently prying my hand from my chest and taking it in his own.

I looked up at him, and his eyes were frantic, but somber.

“Come Rachel, it’s what he said to do.” Tears pooled in my eyes again, and he took my chin under his fingertips.” I swore to him that I would protect my little sister, and to my last breath I will.”

I nodded, too emotional to speak. I was leaving him to destruction, pain, and anguish. There was so much I would be risking.

I took William's hand in my left one, grasping it for a moment, trying to be brave.

There was another crash and a torch tumbled to the ground, making the elegant tapestry go up in flames. The fires were roaring in our ears along with another cry from upstairs, and we ran.

Our feet clambered loudly on the stone floor, the castle slowly falling to pieces behind us, but we didn’t look back.

Outside the wind was blowing our now visible breath past our heads as we continued into the forest. I looked back only for a moment to see the castle, our home, our history, going up in flames. The shadows engulfed us as soon as we were within the trees with only a small amount of moonlight grazing our faces now and then. A howl echoed behind us, and William ran faster, dragging me behind him.

It seemed like we were running for hours, and the temperature had been dropping all the while. My throat had been feeling like I had been inhaling razor sharp shards of ice as we ran. My limbs were numb, but my legs were beginning to feel like gelatin.

“Will,” I gasped, surprising too quiet even for myself to hear, “William, please.” He began to slow, noticing my voice. “Please, we must stop.” My feet planted themselves on the ground, pulling my brother back.

“We cannot!” He turned to face me, grasping both of my wrists fiercely, spittle flew on my face, and his eyes were wild. “If we stop, he could find you and-and-“

“William.” I pleaded. “We must, we’ll be safe. Now we must rest.”

He stared into my eyes for a moment, resisting the urge to argue, his chest heaving in and out as he gasped for air.

“Alright. Yes, you are right…rest; we need…” he stumbled a few feet turning from me, his hand almost leaving my ringed one. I grabbed it again.

“But do not, do not, let go of this hand. Do you understand?” I put as much seriousness as I could manage into my voice.

“Of course dear sister.” He mumbled.

We then walked, searching for a small place of shelter. We were unable to find much besides a small grove of trees that would at least be comfortable to lie on. I lowered myself to the ground and William surprised me by pulling a bag off of his back with necessary things for survival. Food, bandages, clothes, and blankets were in the pack. Last but not least, were a gun and a knife at the very bottom, signifying that they were the first items of his choice. I eyed them, almost in disbelief as William observed their condition. After a moment, he then handed me the pistol. I looked at him questioningly.

“Why don’t you have it? I know how to handle a knife, not a pistol.” I tried to hand it back to him.

He pushed it back in my hand, eyebrows raised. “I am hoping he will not get that close.”

We got ourselves comfortable, still not letting go of each other’s hands, falling asleep wrapped in the blankets William had brought.

In the time from when we had lied down to when the sky began to lighten between the trees, I had not slept. All I could do was worry about him, and how we left him behind to face the terror alone. I started to cry again, wanting to help him, but knowing there was nothing I could possibly do, except to survive. My tears froze in the middle of my checks.

There was a rustle in the trees and footsteps on the leaves. I made myself immobile.

From the direction of the castle came a large animal from the trees. It came slowly and calmly toward me. The closer it got the clearer it became. It was dark brown and easily as large as a bear, but as graceful as a cat and as majestic as a lion. I was not afraid, but awed. The creature approached me, sniffing as it came. It stood next to me, away from William, and I could feel the heat off of its body.

I watched its paws, noticing that they were larger than my hands. Its head hovered over me as it sniffed my left hand and the ring on it. After raising its head, it laid itself on the ground next to me and I finally looked at its eyes.

His eyes were topaz, as were this giant wolf’s. They were somber and pleading. I could almost see him in his eyes.

I was overwhelmed with emotion throwing my arms around his neck and I began to weep. He was here. He was safe. And since he was, I was as well. Shane rubbed his large head gently against me, mopping up my tears. I moved myself against him taking in the warmth, then pulling the blanket over him as the sun began to rise and the softness of his fur began to fade.

I held onto him as he struggled no knowing what else to do. I watched his face become the one I knew so well, the snout turned and shrunk into a nose, along with the rest of his features that shrank to their original state. I kept my eyes on his as soon as the process was done. They were mostly closed and blurred. He looked absolutely exhausted.

“Isaac…” I whispered. “Isaac, speak to me.”

He didn’t respond except for an exhale of breath and he shuddered from the cold. Instantly, I wrapped the blanket tighter around him pulling myself against him, now sharing my warmth since he now had no other protection from the world.

On my other side William stirred in his sleep, then jumped up roaring a call of war. I knew he was only reacting to no longer feeling my hand in his and I didn’t move or say a word.

Dark City

This does not have much of a purpose other than being itself. Just a short story.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A dark city bustled in the bleak rain of winter. The noise of nightlife rose from the streets winding through the tall gray buildings. Down one of the blackest streets steam billowed from the water drains as the silhouette of a woman walked alone down the sidewalk. The doors of a hidden bar lay open with a soft dim light falling to the floor and the lights declaring the place open and the various beverages that lay inside glimmered almost unwelcomingly in its blackened windows. Regardless of her usual actions, the woman walked in to the solemn pub.

Under the lights the clear exhaustion that lingered around her shown. With the deep bags under her eyes and paleness of her cheeks, her slate eyes shone little brighter though dimmed. The shoulder-length light brown hair swerved slightly as she removed her coat and draped it on a stool as she sat down in front of the bar tender.

The bar tender eyed her cautiously as he scrubbed a glass with a rag; she then removed a small handgun from her waist and laid it on the table.

“Some hot chocolate please.” The woman said speaking kindly to the bar tender, she then added, “With mint, if you don’t mind.”

The man simply nodded watching her for another moment longer before retrieving her request, he grunted before turning.

The solemn woman didn’t move. She stared at her hands folded in front of her on the table, clearly in deep thought, not truly looking at anything.

The few others in the small pub also noticed her watching her closely, eying the gun on the table more than its owner herself.

The bar tender returned with her drink, setting it in front of her with steam rising from the small hole in the lid and the soothing aroma of its added ingredient filling the air.

“Thank you, Charlie.” She whispered, taking hold of the cup with both hands and inhaling deeply.

She closed her eyes and took a sip, stopping with her elbows on the table and the cup still between her hands. It was at this time that the diamond ring sitting on the ring finger of her left hand glimmered in the small light above her. The woman watched the lights dancing off of the small gem processing its significance.

Then, setting the still steaming cup on the counter, she looked to Charlie standing a few feet away.

“Would you mind telling me what time it is?” she asked quietly.

“Well, it’s nearly three in the morning.” He replied carefully.

“Hmm.” She said lowering her head slightly.

A moment later a phone began to ring. The woman slowly reached in her pocket, pulling out a black cell phone. She stopped as it still rang, looking at the caller ID on the screen with sad eyes, then sighed and flipped it open.

“Yes?” she answered.

There was some hurried mumbling on the other end and with a calm voice she replied clearly.

“Nathaniel Isaac Karson.” Without another word she closed the phone, ending the call.

There was silence as every person in the bar had their eyes on her, wondering what the conversation had been about.

The woman swallowed the rest of her drink, letting the warm mint run through her, soothing her a little. The bar man was the first to speak.

“Will that be all Corporal Karson?”

“Yes, thank you.” She replied without looking up.

She then pulled out her wallet leaving the cash on the counter. No one said a word as she gathered her things and pulled her coat on. The wind kicked up outside as she walked out of the door.

“Where are you headed?” Charlie asked respectfully.

“Don’t know… probably somewhere quiet.” She replied with a sigh.

The corporal was still alone as she continued down the dark street. There was no one around to see where she was headed, and she didn’t even know herself. Then behind her, sirens sounded while red and blue lights lit up the clouds in the sky.
